Summary        :        Chinese villagers say Buddha mummy statue on display in Europe is theirs
    Languages        :        EN

Villagers from east China's Fujian Province say a sitting Buddha mummy statue which is on exhibition tour in Europe is their long lost treasure.

Official information shows that the Buddha statue, currently exhibited in Budapest, Hungary, belongs to a private collector from the Netherlands.

Villagers from Yangchun Village of Sanming City, however, suspect it to be the Buddha statue which was stolen from their home 20 years ago.

    The villagers have several proofs.

"On the Buddha statue's cushion there are characters reading 'Puzhao Zhanggong Liuquan Buddha'. This is the Hungarian scientists' finding. We just downloaded the image from the internet. In our family history book, there is also characters of 'Puzhao' and 'Zhanggong'. There is even a timeline for that," said Lin Leju, a resident of Yangchun Village.

Foreign experts predicted the Buddha's history to date back to between the 11th and 12th centuries and the remains encased within the statue belong to a monk named Liuquan.

It coincides with the record in Yangchun Village's family history book. The book says the Buddha statue was made in the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 A.D.).

Villagers also offered pictures taken in the 1980s that show a banner hung in the village's temple reading "Xianhua Liuquan Zhanggong Buddha".

Lin Chengfa, a former auxiliary police officer who has worked on the stolen Buddha statue case, said their Buddha statue was stolen just before the Dutch collector purchased one.

"Our Buddha statue was stolen around Oct. 20, 1995, according to the lunar calendar. Then it is reasonable to think that the collector can obtain it by 1996. It is a proof that is logically possible," said Lin Chengfa.

He said the thieves left the statue's clothes and headpiece untouched. He showed that there are also characters of "Zhanggong Buddha" on the clothes.

Villagers also said they remember many details of the stolen Buddha statue. They said the statue's left hand was repaired once and there are cracks at the statue's neck.

They believed that comparing those details with the statue on exhibition would further back their suspicion.

The police bureau of Datian County, where the village is located, is currently looking for details of the stolen Buddha statue case.

And currently the villagers are collecting more evidence, hoping to retrieve what they believe to belong to them.

Buddha statue contains a MUMMIFIED BODY - shock skeleton discovery made by placing sculpture in hospital scanner
The mummified monk's organs had been swapped for paper manuscripts

    M. Elsevier Stokmans Buddah Mummy
A nearly thousand year old mummy has been recently examined with a CT scan and an endoscope. A gastrointestinal and liver doctor took samples of yet unidentified material and examined the thoracic and abdominal cavities

A Chinese statue of a buddha has been found to contain the mummified body of a monk.
The discovery was made after the sculpture was taken to hospital by museum staff for a CT scan.
The body belonged to master Liuquan, a monk who lived around the year 1100 and was a member of the Chinese Meditation School.
The thousand-year-old artefact was examined in a CT scanning machine and with an endoscope.
Samples were also taken from the mummy’s abdominal cavities by a gastroenterologist.
"He made a spectacular discovery: at the place where once had been organs, he found, among all kinds of rotten material, paper scraps that were printed with ancient Chinese characters,” said a hospital spokesman.
The mummy is on display at an exhibition at Drents Museum in the Netherlands.
The finding follows the discovery of a 200-year-old mummified monk in Mongolia. Some argue that the monk is "not dead" but just in a deep meditative state.
